Episode 07: Fjord Trout

Western Norway has some of the country’s most fantastic sceneries, where the mountains seemingly are diving into the fjords. Storfjord, meaning the big fjord connects most of the small communities visited in this episode. When it comes to food our team of three; Arne, Stig and Frida present some of the region’s specialties – and one of them is the fjord trout.

Northbound: The Magical Fjords of Norway

Bergen → Trondheim (3 days)

Your voyage starts in Bergen, the gateway to the Norwegian fjords and the start of your northbound coastal adventure. We sail into the Beautiful West (passing the Havila Voyages headquarters right off Torvik), and into Ålesund, a city renowned for its art nouveau architecture of beautiful brick houses and warehouses. In the summer, we take you on a special voyage to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Geiranger fjord, which has steep mountainsides and dramatic waterfalls.

STAY AT HOTEL UNION ØYE

If you want to travel back in time to enjoy one of Norway’s most charming hotels, you should visit Hotel Union Øye. Situated in Norangdalen in Western Norway. The hotel can be reached by car, boat or helicopter.

Hotel Union Øye was built in 1891 for international mountaineers and travelers wanting to enjoy the incredible mountains and the scenery that surrounds this well-thought-out and extraordinary family-owned hotel. As the only hotel in Norway, it’s represented by the luxurious Relais & Chateaux group. Many kings and queens have stayed the night over the years, and who wouldn’t want the opportunity to order a champagne or gin & tonic only by pressing a switch in the bathroom? Only available in the queen or king suites – enjoy!

The nearby village of Stranda is famous for its trout, cider, and excellent cured meat. It is a natural road stop if you travel by car between Ålesund and Hotel Øye Union.

SKARBØ FARM

Solid craftmanship, award-winning artisanal cheese, pearly ciders and tasty apple juice, all grown and made in a sustainable way. The farm shop is open all year round, the old storehouse with catering and guided tours for groups are available by agreement.

PLATINA SEAFOOD

The headquarter is found in Stranda, surrounded by mountains on all sides. This is the spectacular and beautiful Western Norway. Platina Sea Food has specialized in farming salmon and trout, ethically sourced from beginning to end. We made a visit to a steelhead trout farm, just outside the main office in the fjord, where the fresh water from the local waterfalls mixes with saltwaters. The conditions are ideal for trout aquaculture.
